ETIAS Italy Visa Waiver for Japanese Citizens

Starting in 2021, Japanese citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS Italy visa waiver in order to enter Italy.

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) will be implemented in the Schengen Zone to increase security as a response to the terrorist attacks and illegal migration experienced recently in the area.

62 countries will be eligible for ETIAS visa waivers. Japan is not only on the list but will also participate as a launch member of ETIAS meaning that its citizens will be able to start applying the moment the system goes live.

The ETIAS visa waiver is, as the word suggests, a way to avoid long and complex visa applications. In facts, it applies to nationals of countries that were previously able to enter Italy without a traditional visa.

Obtaining an ETIAS is quick and can be done online entirely. This article includes information about the document requirements, health compliance and all you need to know about ETIAS Italy for Japanese citizens.

ETIAS Italy Online Application: What Information to Submit

Japanese citizens applying for a ETIAS Italy visa waiver will be required to submit personal information in the form of an online form. The process is straightforward and mostly focuses on biographical and contact information.

Applicants will need to include:

  • Full name as it appears on the passport used for the application.
  • Gender.
  • Date and place of birth.
  • Passport number and nationality.
  • Passport issuing date and expiration date.
  • Address.
  • Contact information, including a valid email.

Once issued, the ETIAS Italy will allow its carrier to travel to any of the 26 Schengen member countries. It will hold a validity of 180 days within which the traveler can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days. However, applicants need to make sure to point out the country they will first enter as they fill out their form.

What Documents are Required for an ETIAS Italy Application?

The main document required during the ETIAS Italy online application for Japanese citizens is a valid passport. It is important to make sure that the passport validity extends for at least 3 months beyond the time of intended stay โ€” this is the main passport ETIAS requirement for Japanese nationals.

Expired passports are not valid to complete ETIAS applications. Valid passports issued more than 10 years before the date of entry may not be accepted by Italian authorities.

etias medical information

Generally speaking, travelers visiting Schengen countries โ€” including Italy โ€” do not need to get vaccinated or take special medical precautions.

It is highly recommended that Japanese nationals purchase an international health insurance before departure. As they are not citizens of the EU, they will have to cover potential health-related costs incurred while on Italian soil.

If you find yourself in an emergency while in Italy and need immediate assistance, the general Italian emergency service phone number is 112.

Why Is the ETIAS System Being Implemented?

As mentioned before, the ETIAS system was designed in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks and migration crisis in the Schengen Zone.

However, there are many more ETIAS benefits to consider:

  • The process will make obtaining travel documents to Italy and the Schengen Zone quicker and easier.
  • ETIAS will guarantee the ability to carry out advanced security checks on foreign nationals entering the Schengen area.
  • People seen as a threat to the security of the area will be easily identified and denied entry.
