Temperatures can often be uncomfortably hot in August in the cities, although at least major attractions are usually crowd-free.
Visit Italy in winter
Although the temperatures may be cooler, winter is also a good time to beat the crowds at Italy’s most popular attractions.
For winter sports enthusiasts, January is the best time to ski in Italy, when the many snow-packed resorts in the Italian Alps offer the best deals and crowds are at a minimum.
Some travellers choose to visit between Christmas and New Year to see Italy’s festive site. There is always a huge Christmas tree and life-size nativity scene in Vatican City in Rome. For two whole weeks, visitors can marvel at extravagant masks and costumes, masquerade balls, and a candlelit gondola parade on the canals.
In general, the best time to visit Venice is in the winter, when crowds and boat traffic are at their lowest levels.
