Requirements for Canadians
ETIAS Requirements for Canadian Citizens
The European Union announced the introduction of a new European Travel Information and Authorisation System, ETIAS, to be implemented in 2026. Citizens of eligible countries, including Canada, will need to get an ETIAS Italy visa waiver to travel to Europe.
The ETIAS requirements for Italy will apply to previously visa-exempt citizens who will need to complete an online ETIAS Italy application before they travel to the Schengen zone.
To get an ETIAS Italy, Canadian citizens must offer personal and passport details. The application form will also require that applicants answer security questions about their travel and criminal history.
Currently, Canadian citizens do not need a visa to visit Schengen member countries. Citizens with a Canadian passport who wish to travel to Italy from 2026 need to apply for a travel authorisation and meet the ETIAS Italy requirements for Canadians.
Among the ETIAS Italy requirements for Canadian citizens, applicants must have:
- A valid passport
- A debit or credit card
- An email address
Canadian travellers will be able to complete the ETIAS Italy application form within minutes.
When applying for the ETIAS, a Canadian applicant needs to make sure that they meet the ETIAS Italy requirements before completing the form and paying the visa waiver fee.
Personal information for the ETIAS Italy
Canadian citizens will need to provide some relevant biographical details when completing the ETIAS Italy application.
The ETIAS form needs that applications provide the following essential information:
- Full name as it appears on the passport used for the application
- Date and place of birth
- Gender
- Address
- Contact information, including a valid email
- Passport number and nationality
- Passport issuing date and expiration date
When applying for the ETIAS visa waiver, each applicant should indicate the member state of first intended entry.
Once approved, an ETIAS holder can travel to any of the Schengen member countries for a total stay of up to 90 days in the region within a 180-day period.
Canadian minors will need a valid ETIAS Italy and a valid passport to enter Italy or any Schengen country for that matter. Parents or guardians may complete the application on behalf of the minor. They need to identify themselves and include their details when completing a form for a child.
What documents do I need for the ETIAS Italy?
An ETIAS Italy visa waiver cannot be obtained without a valid passport. This is the main travel document required to successfully get the ETIAS. Upon arrival in Italy, a passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond the expected date of departure.
A passport must be valid when applying for ETIAS, but it also needs to be valid upon arrival in Italy. In the case that the passport expires before ETIAS, the visa waiver can no longer be used to travel to Europe.
If a passport expires before ETIAS, it is necessary to renew the travel document and complete a new ETIAS application with the new travel document.
It will not be possible to renew an ETIAS visa waiver once it expires.
Medical info for Canadian citizens
Non-EU citizens travelling in Italy or in another Schengen country, are advised to get an international health insurance card or plan.
Emergency medical services in Italy consist of a combination of volunteer organizations that provide ambulance service supplemented by physicians and nurses.
Canadian citizens must cover their medical expenses if they make use of these services during their stay in Italy.
Since 2017, the emergency telephone number for emergencies in Italy is 112, to call for an ambulance, police and firefighters.
ETIAS Italy Benefits for Canadian citizens
The ETIAS travel authorisation will be launched with several purposes in mind. ETIAS will be a fundamental tool to identify persons that may pose a threat to the Schengen zone and its residents and visitors alike.
One of the benefits of ETIAS for Canadian citizens and other foreign visitors is that ETIAS will contribute to a safer Europe.
More benefits that will come with the implementation of ETIAS include:
- The ETIAS system will be able to make advance checks on individuals who wish to enter the region.
- ETIAS will deny authorisations to a person seen as a potential threat or risk to the EU.
- Improve internal security of all the member states.
Getting an ETIAS visa waiver to Italy or the Schengen area will not signify a dramatic change for travellers. Canadian citizens can swiftly complete their ETIAS application for Italy in a few minutes.
Most applications will be processed shortly after being submitted. Once approved the ETIAS visa waiver for Italy will be valid for 3 consecutive years and will allow multiple entries.
