Requirements for Japanese

ETIAS Requirements for Japanese Citizens

From 2026, Japanese citizens need to apply for an ETIAS Italy visa waiver to enter Italy and other 29 European countries.

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be implemented in the Schengen zone to smooth immigration checks.

More than 50 countries will be eligible for ETIAS visa waiver including Japan. The country will also participate as a launch member of ETIAS, and its citizens will be able to apply the moment the system goes live.

Getting ETIAS is quick and can be done online entirely.

This article includes information about the ETIAS requirements, and the documents necessary to get the authorisation for Italy.

Personal information for the ETIAS Italy

Japanese citizens applying for an ETIAS Italy visa waiver will be required to submit personal information on an online form.

The process is straightforward and mostly focuses on biographical and contact information.

Applicants will need to include:

  • Full name as it appears on the passport used for the application
  • Date and place of birth
  • Gender
  • Address
  • Contact information, including a valid email
  • Passport number and nationality
  • Passport issuing date and expiration date

Once issued, ETIAS Italy will allow its carrier to travel to any of the Schengen member countries.

Japanese travellers with an approved ETIAS can move freely within the Schengen area for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

What documents do I need for the ETIAS Italy?

The main document required during the ETIAS Italy online application for Japanese citizens is a valid passport.

The passport validity should extend for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from Italy — this is the main passport ETIAS requirement for Japanese nationals.

Expired passports are not valid to complete ETIAS applications. Valid passports issued more than 10 years before the date of entry cannot be used.

Generally speaking, travellers visiting Schengen countries — including Italy — do not need to get vaccinated or take special medical precautions.

It is highly recommended that Japanese nationals purchase international health insurance before departure. As they are not citizens of the EU, they will have to cover potential health-related costs incurred while on Italian soil.

If you find yourself in an emergency while in Italy and need immediate assistance, the general Italian emergency service phone number is 112.

ETIAS Italy Benefits for Japanese citizens

ETIAS is being implemented for several reasons, one of them being smoother immigration checks.

However, there are many more ETIAS benefits to consider:

  • The process will make obtaining travel documents to Italy and the Schengen Zone quicker and easier.
  • ETIAS will guarantee the ability to carry out advanced security checks on foreign nationals entering the Schengen area.
  • People seen as a threat to the security of the area will be easily identified and denied entry.
