Requirements for Macedonians
ETIAS Requirements for Macedonian citizens
The European Union will shortly launch the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in order to increase the border security of the Schengen Area countries, including Italy.
The ETIAS Italy visa waiver will be available for travellers from North Macedonia who are currently eligible for visa-free travel.
Do Macedonian passport holders need a visa for Italy?
Most Macedonian citizens are currently exempt from obtaining a visa to Italy when travelling for tourism and business. However, as of 2026, they need to apply for an ETIAS Italy for North Macedonia through a simple online process.
Macedonians who need a visa, for example, for studying, working, or moving to Italy, will still have to contact the nearest Italian embassy or consulate.
ETIAS is not a visa, but an electronic authorisation that will pre-screen travellers before they enter the Schengen area.
Documents needed by Macedonians to apply for an ETIAS Italy
The ETIAS Italy requirements for North Macedonian citizens will be very simple and include having:
- A valid passport issued by the North Macedonian government
- A debit or credit card to pay the processing fee
- An email address to receive the visa waiver
Other than the completed ETIAS form, North Macedonians applying for a visa waiver will need a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date of departure from Italy.
If the passport expires before the ETIAS visa waiver, it will be necessary to renew it and apply for a new ETIAS with the updated information.
Foreign visitors to Italy should note that it will not be possible to extend an ETIAS visa waiver once it expires. For extended stays in Italy, Macedonian citizens must get an adequate visa.
What will the process of applying for an ETIAS Italy from North Macedonia look like?
Travellers who meet the ETIAS requirements for North Macedonia will have to complete an EU online visa waiver application form, indicating the purpose of their trip and intended travel dates.
In addition, they will be asked to provide essential personal and passport information and answer a series of routine security-related questions.
The last step of the ETIAS application process will be paying the visa waiver processing fee through a secure online system using a debit or credit card authorised for online transactions.
All travellers, including Macedonian minors and children on their parents’ passports, will have to submit an individual application.
Parents and guardians will be able to complete the application on behalf of their children but will be required to provide their personal information when filling out an Italian ETIAS application for a minor.
Will Macedonians be able to visit other Schengen countries with an ETIAS Italy?
Yes. Visitors from North Macedonia will be able to visit any of the other Schengen member countries with an ETIAS Italy.
However, if visiting several countries, they will have to indicate the country of the first entry in the application form.
Macedonian applicants will be able to stay up to 90 days in the region within any 180-day period.
Medical information for Macedonian travellers
Citizens from North Macedonia travelling in Italy and other countries in the Schengen Area are strongly advised to obtain an international health insurance plan prior to their trip. The insurance will help them cover any unexpected medical costs during their stay.
The emergency telephone number in Italy is 112. This number can be dialled for both ambulance, police, and firefighters.
Visitors from North Macedonia using prescription medications should make sure that these are stored in the original packaging and clearly labelled.
ETIAS Italy benefits for Macedonian citizens
ETIAS will be an essential tool for identifying individuals that may pose a threat to the Schengen area countries. This new system will contribute to making travelling to the region safer.
In addition, ETIAS Italy will offer many other benefits to North Macedonian passport holders.
Firstly, the application will only take a few minutes and the travel authorisation will be sent to the Macedonian applicant’s email in a matter of hours.
Secondly, once approved, the ETIAS Italy will be valid for 3 consecutive years for multiple entries.
Third, North Macedonian ETIAS holders will be able to travel to other Schengen countries using the same visa waiver.
