Requirements for Malaysians
Malaysian citizens wishing to visit Italy can do so without a visa. However, from 2026, when the European Union introduces the Electronic Travel and Information System, ETIAS, they will need to get an electronic authorisation before their trip.
The electronic travel authorisation system will grant Malaysians travelling to Italy permission to enter the country and stay for up to 90 days.
Furthermore, an approved ETIAS will allow Malaysian travellers to move freely within the Schengen area during their travels.
ETIAS requirements for Malaysian citizens
To apply for ETIAS to visit Italy, Malaysian citizens must be in possession of:
- A valid Malaysian passport
- A valid Malaysian passport
- An active email address (to which the electronic ETIAS will be delivered)
If Malaysians meet these 3 main requirements, they can proceed to fill out the ETIAS application form. To complete the application, all Malaysian citizens need is a device with an internet connection.
To get ETIAS, each traveller must enter personal and passport information on the online form accurately. Applicants also need to answer a few security-related questions.
Submit application and receive it within minutes
Once completed and revised, Malaysian travellers can submit their ETIAS Italy application. Most applications will be processed within minutes. However, it’s also possible some applications take longer to process. Therefore, it’s recommended to apply at least 72 hours in advance.
Once approved, the traveller is notified via email about the status of their ETIAS Italy.
Minors also need a valid ETIAS
Each Malaysian visitor must have an approved ETIAS upon arrival in Italy, children included. Parents or guardians may complete their child’s application and provide their details too.
On a minor’s application, the parent may use their email address to receive ETIAS notifications.
ETIAS is electronically linked to the biometric passport, therefore, it is essential for parents to provide accurate information.
Personal information for the ETIAS Italy
Malaysians travelling to Italy need to provide the following personal information when they apply for ETIAS to visit Italy:
- Full name as it appears on passport
- Place and date of birth
- Gender
- Home address
- Contact information, inc. phone number and email address
- Passport details (number, date of issue, expiry date)
- Nationality as stated on passport
To comply with ETIAS Italy requirements for Malaysian citizens, applicants will also need to state their intended port of entry into Italy or the wider Schengen area. ETIAS Italy grants Malaysian authorisation to visit not just Italy, but any Schengen member state for a maximum of 90 days within a single 180-day time period.
The information Malaysian travellers provide on their ETIAS Italy application will be cross-checked with such European security databases as Interpol, EURODAC, and VIS.
Applications which trigger an alarm in the system are reviewed manually by ETIAS staff. In the event that an ETIAS application is rejected, the applicant can appeal this decision by providing additional evidence to support their application.
What documents do I need for the ETIAS Italy?
To apply for ETIAS to visit Italy from Malaysia, it is essential to be in possession of a valid Malaysian passport.
The passport must be valid at the time of application, throughout the holder’s stay in Italy and for 3 months beyond their date of departure from the country or another Schengen country.
Once approved, the ETIAS Italy for Malaysians is valid for a period of 3 years. If the passport expires, the ETIAS attached to it will be rendered invalid. If this happens, it’s necessary to renew their passport and then apply for a new ETIAS Italy for Malaysians.
Medical info for Malaysian citizens
There are no specific health advisories, disease outbreak warnings, or vaccination requirements for Malaysians travelling to Italy, and Italy is considered to be a low-risk travel destination for Malaysians in terms of health hazards.
When travelling on the ETIAS Italy, Malaysians are still advised to keep track of any news and developments from Italy prior to their trip, as health advisories are subject to change.
It is recommended that Malaysians travelling to Italy get health insurance to cover any possible injury, accident, or other medical expense while they are in the Schengen area. Non-EU citizens are not entitled to automatic health coverage inside the European Union and may be liable for any medical bills they incur.
Malaysians carrying prescription medicines upon entry into Italy should also confirm that these medicines are stored in their original packaging and are clearly labelled.
The number for the emergency services in Italy is 112.
ETIAS Italy Benefits for Malaysian Citizens
Since the ETIAS is a security measure designed to improve public safety and protect against external threats within the Schengen area, it will make travel within Europe safer.
By pre-screening travellers, ETIAS will contrast information with security databases. The system will identify whether an individual may pose a potential threat.
Furthermore, ETIAS Italy will contribute to smoother immigration checks.
