Requirements for Uruguayans

Uruguayans travelling to Italy are exempt from having to obtain a visa. In 2026, however, the ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorisation System, will be introduced.

The online security and travel authorisation system will grant Uruguayans permission to enter Italy before they depart from Uruguay.

ETIAS requirements for Uruguayan citizens

ETIAS Italy requirements for Uruguayans include the following:

  • An Uruguayan passport valid for at least3 months beyond the intended date of departure from Italy
  • An active debit or credit card (to pay the application fee)
  • A working email address

If Uruguayan travellers meet these requirements, they can go ahead and apply for ETIAS to visit Italy.

To start, they can complete and submit a short, simple online application form. This form will ask for details concerning the applicant’s basic personal information, passport, travel history, and criminal record.

Applications for the ETIAS Italy for Uruguayans can be completed entirely online at the convenience of the applicant.

The maximum processing time for an ETIAS Italy for Uruguayans is usually no more than 72 hours, but the majority of applications are processed and delivered to the applicant within a matter of minutes.

All Uruguayan travellers must have a valid ETIAS upon arrival in Italy, minors included. However, parents and guardians can complete and submit an ETIAS application on behalf of their child. They must also submit their own details.

  • Date of birth and place of birth
  • Gender
  • Current address
  • Phone number, email address, and other contact details
  • Passport number, date of issue, and expiry date
  • Nationality

Taiwanese travelling to Italy will also be asked a few security questions. It is essential that all information is provided accurately, any omissions or mistakes may lead to delays and even ETIAS rejection.

Additionally, ETIAS Italy requirements for Uruguayans specify that all travelers must state their planned port of entry into the Schengen Area. ETIAS permits Uruguayan nationals to enter not only Italy but any Schengen Country for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Uruguayans travelling to Italy must enter their details to facilitate cross-checking of ETIAS applications against such European security databases as Interpol, EURODAC, and VIS. If an ETIAS application is flagged during this cross-check, it will be reviewed manually by an ETIAS staff member.

Any Uruguayan national who has their ETIAS application rejected may appeal the rejection by providing ETIAS staff with additional documentation to support the application.

What documents do I need for the ETIAS Italy?

The main document any Uruguayan citizen needs to apply for ETIAS to visit Italy is a valid passport issued by the Uruguayan government.

The passport needs to be valid for a minimum of 3 months beyond the intended departure date from Italy and/or the Schengen Zone.

Once issued, the ETIAS Italy for Uruguayans remains valid for 3 consecutive years and can be used for the first time at any point during those three years.

If an ETIAS is attached to an expired passport, however, it is considered invalid and cannot be used for travel, regardless of the date on which it was issued. In this case, Uruguayan nationals are advised to renew their passport and apply for ETIAS to visit Italy again.

Italy is a safe country, and there are currently no major health, disease, or vaccination warnings for Uruguayans travelling to Italy.

Furthermore, it is recommended that holders of the ETIAS Italy for Uruguayans ensure they have sufficient health insurance to cover any emergency that may occur during their trip. This is because non-EU citizens are not covered for healthcare costs within the EU.

In addition, Uruguayans travelling to Italy with prescription medications should carry these medications clearly labelled and in their original packaging for possible inspection at their port of entry.

The number for ambulance and fire services in Italy is 112.

ETIAS Italy benefits for Uruguayan citizens

ETIAS is being introduced by the European Union to counter external threats to the Schengen area and increase public safety within Schengen countries. Because of this, Uruguayans travelling to Italy or the wider Schengen area on an ETIAS can feel more secure during their visit.
